More and more participants of the upcoming BRICS Games 2024 are arriving at Kazan every day. Delegations from Brazil, Burkina Faso, and Mali were welcomed this morning with all the honours and celebrations at the Athletes’ Village, place of accommodation of the athletes, and the Russian national artistic gymnastics team checked into their rooms a few hours later.
The Brazilian team comprises over 100 athletes. They will take part in competitions among 12 sports, including badminton, judo, karate, table tennis, swimming, fencing, and others.
“The mood is great, I am very happy to represent Brazil at this tournament”, said badminton player Pedro Mendonça. “This is my first time in Russia, I know a little about this country, but it sure is interesting to be here. I know that the 2018 FIFA World Cup was held here. It was not easy to qualify for the Games, so I am super exited to participate. My main competition is Sergey Sirant from Russia, as well as Chinese athletes. They are also quite advanced.”
The Republic of Mali will be represented at the BRICS Games 2024 by a team of four badminton players, while the Burkina Faso team includes badminton players and track and field athletes.
“This is my first time in Russia but I have heard a lot about this country. I have watched a lot of videos about your country on TV and YouTube”, said Boubacar Traoré, Mali team badminton coach. “Russia and Mali have been establishing co-operation as of late, and Russia is a good friend to my country. I would like Mali to become the first African country to win in badminton, but we have some worthy opponents.”
The Russian national artistic gymnastics team has one of the most distinguished squads of all the BRICS Games teams. The Head of the Delegation is Nikita Nagorny, who won Olympic team gold in 2020 Tokyo and is a multiple European world champion. At the BRICS Games 2024, he will be joined by his colleagues from the Tokyo champion team: David Belyavskiy and Artur Dalaloyan, European and world championship winners; Angelina Melnikova, Olympic gold medallist; and other star athletes.
“Kazan is a special city for me. I will enjoy every second of performing at the BRICS Games. We are counting on a victory. We have assembled the strongest team: Olympic champions, world champions, but there are also some rookies for whom this will be the first international tournament. The atmosphere of the international event is incredible; it’s so important for us to live and exist as a team now, I really missed that”, said Nikita Nagorny.
“We expect only the best from this competition. Kazan is a gymnastic city, where the welcome is very warm and there are always a lot of fans”, commented Artur Dalaloyan.
The BRICS Games badminton and artistic gymnastics competitions will start on 13 June. Tickets for the Games can be purchased on the BRICS Games official website or on kassir.ru, the tournament’s official partner.
